All of my tutoring and coaching sessions begin with an initial meeting, where we get to know each other and develop shared goals. Services include:
Non-Fiction Writing Tutoring: We get to know the genres of Non-Fiction and how each one is classified. We read Non-Fiction sources and determine their credibility. Then, pick specific genres to focus on and build structured paragraphs in that style. If interested- we will spend time on focused research and paraphrasing and summarizing direct quotes, using MLA Documentation Style.
Essay Coaching: You can come to me with essays in progress and we will collaborate to make them more meaningul and profound OR we can start from the ground-up, through pre-writing strategies, and different outline methods, to build essays that are prompt specific. In-depth practice on how to dissect writing prompts and how to elaborate in your own words.
College Application Essay Coaching: I will share my insider tips on what college admissions' essay readers look for. Then, help you brainstorm your Personal Statement, PIQs, and supplementals. We'll check in as needed with each other, through Google Docs and/or Zoom and edit them so that who you are shines through.
Reading Comprension and Vocabulary Development: We'll read Fiction and Non-Fiction books together that match (or exceed) the state standards for your grade level. We'll make predictions, think criticially, experiment with using context clues to define unknown words, and access prior knowledge to build reading stamina.
General Literacy: The mission of this experience is to get kids excited about reading. We'll learn all of the parts of the books, discuss characterization, components of a story, and anticipate what the reader wants to know. Spelling and grammar will develop through silly games and word desconstruction.
American History Tutoring: American History is my passion. You can meet with someone who is so excited to help you tie it all together. We can develop timelines and research particular people - their motivations, and impacts. I can come up with long-term projects that get children excited and deepen their understanding.
Cooking American History: We meet in person OR via Zoom. You learn valuable kitchen skills and use budget-friendly ingredients. Each recipe is related to a time in American History. We start chronologically. I lecture on the fun facts while we prepare a meal together. Then, we sit down and enjoy!
